Radiant Floor Heating Contractors in New York

The absolute comfort and warmth of a radiant floor heating system has been lauded in the news lately and all over the Internet. For those who live anywhere in New York City,  it is a cost effective way to heat your home; but for those who live in extremely cold climates it can seem heaven sent. Putting bare feet on a cold floor when it’s below zero outside is an exercise in cruelty! Radiant heating systems bring a sense of warm luxury to any floor they are placed beneath. Let’s discuss how these systems are installed to provide these exercises in warm comfort every day of the cold season. While there are several installation methods available for radiant floor heating systems, these are the four most popular methods.

1.      Concrete Slab Wet Installation

This professional installation method is the one that has been used the longest and is quite suitable for all three types of radiant systems; hydronic, electrical cable, and mat. Also associated with the term slab-on-grade installation, it is placed below the top level of the flooring foundation in wet concrete. New home construction is usually where this method is used, and it requires a professional installer. This is also the method used when driveways are heated in the Northern Regions and for large commercial buildings.

2.      Subfloor Installation

Again both hydronic and electrical radiant systems can be installed using this method of installing the radiant system over the subfloor of concrete or wood and sandwiched between them and the underfloor layer of concrete or plywood. Using the hydronic radiant system can raise your floor height by 3inches, and using the mats can result in 1/8 inch rise.

Between Floor Beams in Existing homes

If you can see underneath your home, this method can be used quite easily. The spaces between the beams of the subfloor are used to suspend the radiant floor heating system, and this is covered by a reflective material to reflect the heat towards the subflooring. This can also be the installation method used when completely renovating a home or a single room for installation by the DIY.

Dual Surface Installation

When you install a radiant floor heating system in a subfloor that is also the ceiling of another level of your home, this is the installation method used. It not only heats the subfloor it is attached to but the system itself for heat transference. Like a basement ceiling is the floor of the upper level, heat will be distributed above and below the subfloor. This method will require a professional to ensure the system is enclosed properly and heating evenly over the subfloor and the length of the system.

These methods have proven effective for proper performance of the radiant floor heating systems, and are all recommended by the manufacturers.
